Between Evidence
and Invention

Ongoing photographic series

Between Evidence and Invention explores the moment when a real place begins to lose its certainty. Working spontaneously, I photograph architecture, landscape and transitional spaces, then remove or transform details according to the atmosphere I am trying to express.

The degree of manipulation varies between photographs. Sometimes the intervention is almost imperceptible; elsewhere, much of the original image is reconstructed. The intention is not to document a place exactly as it appeared, but to preserve how it felt—or how it might exist in memory.

Catholic architecture and symbolism enter the work through my Lithuanian background and personal faith. Towers, crosses and monuments become points of tension between the physical and spiritual, permanence and disappearance. Light and weather transform familiar locations into psychological environments suspended between observation and invention.

Gabriele Elena
Simulynaite

I am a Lithuanian environment artist and fine-art photographer, born in Vilnius and based in London. My practice developed from a background in costume design, textile art and cinematic environment creation—disciplines that continue to shape how I understand surface, space and atmosphere.

I work spontaneously, beginning with a real location and responding to the feeling it creates. I may remove or transform details if they interfere with the atmosphere I am trying to express. The intervention can be almost invisible or substantially reconstruct the original image.

I am not trying to preserve a place exactly as it appeared. I am interested in the moment it becomes uncertain—when architecture, weather and light transform physical evidence into something psychological or remembered.
